- Because of the collapse of a hotel in Mecca on January 5, 2006, 76
Muslim pilgrims who were there to fulfill their religious obligations lost
their lives. One week later, on the last day of the Hajj, 362 pilgrims died
in a stampede during the stoning of the devil in Mina.
- More than 6,000 people died in a 6.3-magnitude earthquake in Ja-
va, Indonesia, on May 27, 2006, while another 36,000 were injured and 1.5
million were left homeless.
