03 Nine Ways of Modifying Knots (28-48) 4/10/07 12:11 PM Page 28
EXTENSIONS AND VARIATIONS OF BASIC KNOTS
Quite a few modified knots were taught in the author’s Chinese Knotting: Creative Designs That Are Easy and Fun! and
Fun with Chinese Knotting: Making Your Own Fashion Accessories and Accents. This book, after classifying the nine major
variation skills, goes on to further analyse each of the enriched variations.
Each basic knot has its own unique characteristics and the number of variations that can be derived from each basic
knot also differs. In this book alone, there are 56 new modified knots. Each is accompanied by step-by-step drawings and
instructions for making the various knots. Photographs of the finished knots are also provided.
Examples
Ear Loops and Outer Loops Good Luck Knot: Front and Back of First Layer
In this book, a portion of a shuttling cord is called an ear
loop, while a loop around the knot body is an outer loop.
There are two types of ear loops. One is the type that
shuttles left and right or up and down, such as the ones that
make up the cloverleaf knot. The other type is a circle, like
the ones used in the double coin knot.
