Fixed wing
safety
Approaching and departing from
a fixed wing aircraft.
1. Stay in the pilot’s field of view at all times. Approach only when the
pilot indicates that it is safe to do so. Caution: The safety zones for
approaching a fixed wing aircraft are the reverse of that for helicopters.
2. Always beware of the propeller/s, particularly when engine/s are
idling during warm up and brief stops to load or unload passengers,
materials or equipment.
3. Never lean on the propeller of a reciprocating/piston engine aircraft as
the engine can turn over if the ignition switches are left on, or are faulty.
4. Do not handle control surfaces such as ailerons, elevators, rudders,
flaps or trim tabs.
5. Do not handle aerials as they are easily bent.
6. Do not handle pitot tubes; they can be bent and could be hot.
7. When boarding and leaving aircraft, be careful to avoid using panel
areas marked “no step”.
8. The pilot is responsible for correct weight and balance of the aircraft.
Only assist with loading heavy or bulky equipment or materials
under the pilot’s supervision.
For fixed wing and helicopter safety zones please see diagrams
on page 39.
