SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
The Karingani Design & Sustainability Guidelines were used throughout the design process to guide decisions
making.
Instrumental in this process was a digital thermal modeling exercise conducted to achieve an energy-efficient
building shell and understand if the building can operate comfortably without mechanical cooling equipment,
thereby reducing power consumption, capital costs and ongoing operational costs.
The results informed the design and material decisions including building orientation, glazing specification, glazing
extent, insulation and passive ventilation strategies.
As a result of this process, key design interventions included:
• No mechanical air conditioning
• Cooling tower
• Shading of glazed surfaces
• Passive ventilation
CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS
The construction of Xinghana Community Lodge commenced in October 2019 and is projected for completion in
June 2021. Project completion was delayed by 9-months, primarily due to COVID-19.
