After struggling at the bottom end of the table in recent times, Solihull
Moors have started the season well and their 5-0 victory over
Bedworth Utd on Sunday has taken them into fourth place in the
FAWNL Midlands Division One table.
Moors midfielder Maisie McDonnell told us she was delighted
with the team's display in beating Bedworth and is looking forward to
a brighter future for the club:
WSS: Well played on Sunday and a fine win for you, was
the result a good indication of the way the team played?
MM: Yes definitely, I think we looked at our weaknesses from the
week before and addressed them in the two training sessions within the week. We respected
Bedworth as they are a good side in this league and have a game plan which they execute well,
however we highlighted their strengths and acted upon them and it just shows how we
delivered our game plan and executed it very well in order to achieve the result we did.
WSS: Was the first goal particularly important, coming as it did just before half
time?
MM: Yeah massively! I think any team wants to go into the half time break being the winning
side and we did exactly that which, as a team, lifted the spirits just before that half time
whistle and highlighted to us girls that we were off the mark and there was plenty more goals
in the game, which there certainly was as we can all see from the full time scoreline.
WSS: Leah Seivwright is on fire right now, with a hat-trick against Bedworth,
and she is the joint leading scorer in the division. How big a boost to the team is
it to have such a big goal threat up front?
MM: Leah is absolute class, the quality she provides in the final third is absolutely top level
and as a midfielder you know that if the delivery is there, she will provide that end product
and having that confidence in those areas lifts the confidence through the team massively. On
a personal level I can confirm that Leah is definitely one of the best forwards I have played
with during my football career and I’m sure she doesn’t stop there she has so much more in
her locker this season!
WSS: The team has been struggling near the foot of the table in recent seasons
but have made a great start this time around. What has changed since last
season came to an end, how much have the new players helped?
MM: Moors have been in a difficult situation in recent seasons struggling at the foot of the
table and even last season was a struggle for us fighting in a relegation battle, however I think
situations like this pull you together as a team and makes Moors who we are. However since
last season, this team has come on leaps and bounds as a whole on and off the pitch. As a team
we cannot thank the club enough for providing the facilities which we have in order to better
us girls as a whole. In addition to this, the coaching staff week in week out delivering top class
training sessions providing constant development to us girls as a team and finally, David
Healey along with the other coaching staff, undergoing a rebuilding period of recruiting a few
players pre season which has impacted this team massively! Considering how much of a new
team we are, it just shows that we are no longer Solihull Moors fighting for relegation, we are
now Solihull Moors fighting for that upper half of the table.
WSS: Another clean sheet on Sunday and apart from the Wolves game, your
defensive record is very good overall. Does that give as much satisfaction as
scoring five goals?
MM: Oh yes of course, keeping a clean sheet is just as important as scoring goals. With only
conceding two goals in our league games apart from the Wolves game highlights how far we
