Purples reign!

Woking Ladies 0 AFC Stoneham 6
AFC Stoneham had an excellent afternoon in
their Southern Region League Division One
encounter with Woking, winning by six goals to
nil with a fine team performance.
Both clubs are in their first season at this
level having made excellent progress in their
brief existences but on this occasion it was the
visitors who emerged with the honours.
             Stoneham dominated the early stages
with Rachel Adkin having a header cleared off
the line from a corner in the second minute.
Woking competed well and played their way into
the contest but were undone by a clever Adkin
header from a free kick past the onrushing
       keeper on 24 minutes.
Stoneham always posed the greater Olivia Eaton closes down Tia Williams in possession
threat with Madison Payne working well down (www.jamesprickett.co.uk).
the right and putting in several dangerous
crosses, but Woking were determined and had kept the margin to a single goal until a
freak second was added just before the break, Payne tried to play an inviting early cross
which somehow crept in at the far post on 45 minutes.
Woking's Joey Harfield-Brown nearly reduced the arrears early in the second
half but Stoneham were soon further ahead when a neat right side build up saw Payne
free to net from close in on 49 minutes.
A good run and composed finish by Jess Treweek gave the visitors a fourth on 56
minutes. When two further Stoneham goals came quick succession with twenty minutes
still to go, Woking were seemingly in big trouble. Firstly Chloe Andrews and then Alisha
Buckingham scored excellent individual efforts to make it six for the Purples.
To their credit, the hosts never gave up and had their most productive spell in the
final period of the match in terms of putting pressure on the Stoneham defence. Ella
Smith and Tia White both had efforts saved by Shannon White in the Stoneham goal
but a consolation did not arrive.
With a Vitality Women’s FA Cup derby against next door neighbours Eastleigh
to look forward to, the Purples are on a good run, whilst Woking will hope to continue
their adaption to Regional League competition as the season develops.
