Continental Cup
The FA Women’s Continental League Cup got back underway
this week with four more group matches taking place.
On Wednesday night, in Group A, Sheffield Utd played
host to Liverpool and a tightly contested game saw few chances at either end. Neither side
could conjure up a winner on the night, the match therefore finishing goalless and going into
a penalty shootout.
It was Liverpool who triumphed 5-3 from the spot and took the extra point.
Remarkably, both teams have seen their two matches go all the way to penalties and with the
same result on both occasions.
Meanwhile in Group B, Everton travelled to Leicester City who were making their
first appearance in this season’s competition. The match was made more notable by it being
newly appointed Everton manager Jean-Luc Vasseur’s first match in charge and they could
not have got off to a better start, Anna Anvegard giving them the lead with just two minutes on
the clock. Izzy Christiansen doubled the Toffees’ lead ahead of half time and after Ashleigh
Plumptre had given Leicester fresh hope by pulling a goal back with eight minutes remaining,
Valerie Gauvin sealed a 3-1 victory for Everton when she scored the third late on.
There were two more matches played on Thursday night, including at Blackburn
Rovers where visitors Sunderland notched up a 2-1 victory which takes them to the top of
Group A.
Both teams went into the game on the back of good wins in the league a few days earlier
but it was Sunderland who were to have the better of things during the first half. Grace
McCatty scored for the second time in as many matches to give them the lead and Holly
Manders made it two on the stroke of half time. Farah Crompton reduced the arrears for
Blackburn with twelve minutes remaining but Rovers could not get back on terms and
Sunderland held on for a hard earned win.
Manchester City meanwhile kept up their good start in Group B, registering a second
straight win when they defeated Durham Women 3-0. The Championship leaders were
making their bow in this season’s competition but found themselves behind when Filippa
Angeldahl gave City the lead just after the quarter hour. Angeldahl almost scored a second
after the break but saw her effort strike the post and Durham kept themselves in the game until
two late goals broke their resistance. First, Caroline Weir marked her 100th appearance for the
club with a trademark strike from the edge of the area to double City’s advantage and three
minutes later, Janine Beckie put the seal on the win when she fired home from close range.
The Cup will resume in two weeks time with the next round of group matches.
