An interview with…..
Carly Johns (Oxford United)
Oxford United have been in good form in recent weeks and
Sunday’s 3-0 victory away to Cardiff City Ladies in the
FAWNL Southern Premier Division was their sixth win in
seven matches in all competitions.
Oxford striker Carly Johns, who has been a regular on
the scoresheet this season, told us that the victory at Cardiff
goes down as a good result in their season so far, and that the
team remains confident of climbing further up the league
table as the season goes on:
WSS: Another good win for you at what is usually
a tough place to go, does that go down as one of
your best performances this season to date?
CJ: We’ve had plenty of really good performances this
season and it was great to score three goals and keep a
clean sheet at the weekend, so it definitely goes down as a
good win against a tough side..
WSS: All three goals came in the later stages of the
game, did the first goal turn out to be the pivotal
moment?
CJ: I believe we were pushing for that first goal and we knew it would come if we were patient
on the ball. We had lots of chances to go 1-0 up in the first half, therefore it was well deserved
that we got our goals. After the first goal we then gained momentum and another two
followed.
WSS: Quite a few of your players have been amongst the goals this season, is
that something than can give the team a lot of confidence?
CJ: It’s good that we don’t rely on one specific person to score all of the goals, so yes it does
give everyone confidence because we all know that every person on the pitch can stick the ball
in the back of the net.
WSS: The result against Cardiff made it six wins in seven games and with some
good signings to the squad, do you feel confident that the team is moving in the
right direction quickly?
CJ: We are on a good run at the moment, so we are looking to keep that going in the cup game
against Bridgwater this Sunday at Court Place Farm. The team is definitely gaining
confidence as we go along.
WSS: As you say, this week is the League Cup and a home tie with Bridgwater
United, are you expecting a tough game against them?
CJ: We have already played Bridgwater this season in the league, we won 3-0 and we broke
their unbeaten run so we know what they are capable of doing. It will be another tough game.
WSS: Do you see the League Cup as one of your best chances for silverware this
season?
CJ: We have high expectations as a club, so of course we are expecting to go far in this cup, it
is a good chance to get some silverware and I am very confident that we will be up there
challenging for it.
WSS: How tough has it been this season for teams in your division with
Southampton and Ipswich competing in it?
CJ: The competition in the league has shot up massively, which is a good thing for women’s
football in general. It is getting tougher as each season goes on but we are more than capable
of standing our ground and challenging for the top spot.
