London City Lionesses made a strong return to action following the winter
break as they ran out 5-0 winners away to Crystal Palace to preserve their one
point lead at the top. Sarah Ewens opened the scoring, before Jamie-Lee Napier
and Karin Muya added further goals ahead of half time. Muya completed her
double midway through the second half and Lucy Shepherd rounded off the
scoring in injury time.
The Lionesses’ win was all the more impressive
seeing that they played after Bristol City, who had
temporarily regained the leadership with a dramatic
3-2 victory against Coventry Utd. Chloe Bull gave
City a ninth minute lead but after the break, Coventry
hit back and after Eleanor Ryan-Doyle levelled the
scores, Mary McAteer put them ahead with eight
minutes remaining. A shock looked on the cards but as
the game went into injury time, goals from Grace
Clinton and Abi Harrison gave City what had seemed
an unlikely win.
Third placed Charlton Athletic did not play as
their match at Blackburn Rovers was postponed,
whilst Birmingham City went level on points with
them by winning 1-0 away to Sheffield Utd. Claudia
Walker marked her return to the Blues by scoring the
only goal of the game, just after the hour mark. Sunderland’s Elizabeta Ejupi closes down
Southampton would have gone back into the Maria Farrugia of Durham Women (Will Cheshire).
