We head for Achille Sound and the only bridge off the island

and are dismayed to find that they are resurfacing the bridge.

Men with wheelbarrows and hand tools are spreading blacktop.

A steaming roller is mashing it down. We passed a dog

running for all he was worth back about a half mile before the

bridge and as we sit there he passes us and tries to go across

the bridge. His little feet can’t handle the hot tar so he gets off

the tar and runs in circles for 15 minutes till they get it rolled
down and then he tries again. He makes it that time. We

speculate about his mission (dinner or a hot date – we can’t
decide). Naturally now that we are stuck the sun comes out

and shines brightly and the wind dies down.

Finally after 45 minutes, we roll over the new surface of the

bridge and get back to the Coral Reef. I intend to rest and

clean up a bit but first Ann serves us tea in the lounge. She also

brings Irish whiskey cake with fresh strawberries and ice

cream. The cake isn’t sweet and the whiskey is pretty powerful

               but it’s wonderful.

I try to rest but the house

is too noisy so I give up

               and we go to Matt

               Malloy’s Pub in

               Westport. I guess he is

               one of the well-known

               Irish group called the

               Chieftains but he isn’t in

               town so there’s no telling

               who’ll be playing tonight.
