downpours. We drive in a big loop out to Dooagh passing
cliffs, beaches and many sheep (some nursing lambs right at
the edge of the road or in
the road.
A small Castle we pass
has an interesting story.
Kildavnet Castle, was
once a stronghold of
Grainne Ni Mhaille a 16 century warrior queen. This Gaelic
th
Irish name translates into Grace O’Malley. For forty years,
Grainne Ni Mhaille had harassed the ships of Queen Elizabeth
I. It proved to be a profitable as well as patriotic endeavor, for
it was strongly tinged with piracy. During a personal
confrontation with Elizabeth, she was offered a title if she
would cease leading rebellions in the west of Ireland. Refusing,
she reminded Elizabeth that no matter what status was offered,
she already possessed it as Queen of Connacht.
