               cliffs, beaches and many sheep (some nursing lambs right at

                                                                          A small Castle we pass

                                                                          has an interesting story.


































                                                                          Kildavnet Castle, was

                                                                          once a stronghold of

               Grainne Ni Mhaille a 16  century warrior queen.  This Gaelic
                                                     th
               Irish name translates into Grace O’Malley.  For forty years,

               Grainne Ni Mhaille had harassed the ships of Queen Elizabeth

               I.  It proved to be a profitable as well as patriotic endeavor, for

               it was strongly tinged with piracy.  During a personal

               confrontation with Elizabeth, she was offered a title if she

               would cease leading rebellions in the west of Ireland.  Refusing,
               she reminded Elizabeth that no matter what status was offered,


               she already possessed it as Queen of Connacht.
