Bereavement Leave
The National Wildlife Federation recognizes that bereavement is a difficult life event, requiring
time to grieve and fulfill family obligations. NWF further recognizes that failure to take this
time may negatively impact work and the employee’s transition back to a normal routine.
All active Regular Full Time and Regular Part Time employees, and interns are eligible for
NWF Bereavement Leave. Temporary and On-Call employees are not eligible for this paid
leave benefit.
When death occurs in an employee’s immediate family, eligible employees may take up to five
working days per occurrence. NWF’s bereavement leave policy is intended to be administered
in a respectful and flexible manner. The manager and the employee should agree on how
much time is needed. The basis for the decision might include the employee’s relationship to
the deceased, travel distance, and his or her involvement in funeral arrangements. Generally,
bereavement leave is taken immediately following the death. However, we recognize the need
for flexibility and bereavement is not required to be taken immediately following the death.
Immediate family members are defined as follows
Spouse Daughter/son-in-law An adult who stood “in loco parents” during
an employee’s childhood
Children/Step Domestic Partner Domestic Partner’s mother, father, sister,
children brother, son or daughter
Parents/Step Grandparent Spouse’s or domestic partner’s grandparent
parents or grandchild
Grandchild Siblings Mother/father-in-law
All eligible employees may take up to one (1) day of with pay to attend the funeral of a close
family member, friend or close, non-family member.
Community Service/Volunteer Leave
NWF believes in the value of giving back to its community and encourages and supports
efforts by the organization and its employees to be good corporate citizens. The goal of this
program is to provide an outlet for NWF staff to contribute to its community, to recognize
the diversity of staff's personal interests, and to increase individual satisfaction and
stewardship. NWF will support this by offering eight hours of paid leave to participate in
individual or organization wide service contributions. These eight hours are non-cumulative
on a calendar year basis.
