Six months into their marriage Mahala Shaw Sterling
died from heart disease.
In 1936 Granpa Bladlock Fathered a female child with
his twenty-two-year-old stepdaughter Emma Shaw Sterling.
They named the baby girl Ida Mae.
Fourteen years later, Ida Mae Sterling gave birth to me.
Granpa Bladelock died in 1959 at the age of ninety-nine.

I was born April 10, 1950, and raised in Aliquippa,
Pennsylvania, a small town sixteen miles southwest
of Pittsburg.
My birth slave name was Lawrence Wolfgang Sterling.
Ida Mae Sterling was my mother’s maiden name.
