“A robust talent assessment system must include two key parameters – Contribution and
Potential, apart from other things like strengths, opportunity areas, career interests, annual
targets and action plans etc.”
“Contributions is tangible and is easy to assess -- the actual results vis-à-vis the goals and
targets. There are sufficient metrics in use. Potential is a huge challenge; and the challenge
begins with defining what is potential and goes all the way to its assessment. No wonder, most
companies leave it to the direct boss to make a totally subjective assessment of potential.”
“It is also a key reason for people dissatisfaction about their promotability.” Added Ron
looking at Dan.
Dan understood what Ron had left unspoken. He did well not to let it show on his face.
“How would you define potential Ron?” he asked instead.
“I will answer it Dan but before that we need to understand another important concept. I
know it is not appropriate to counter question, but I am sure you will understand.” “Tell me
how your work has changed since you joined the company 19 years ago?”
‘Wow, he knows I joined the company 19 years back.’ was Dan’s first thought.
“I have progressively spent more time on leadership which was not the case when I started.
In fact, this has made me busier and increased my workload.”
“We will talk about leadership little later Dan. Let us first review this.”
Ron walked to whiteboard and drew a picture.
