“Thanks Tom. Yes, absolutely! I have now started to hold all of you accountable; and now
I coach rather than micromanage, wherever I see a capability gap. I hope you noticed.”
“Yes Dan. We all have. And it has been such a refreshing change for all of us.”
“Great,” said Dan. “Secondly, as we move up the hierarchy, our roles change. At your level,
you need to find the right balance between direct involvement in day-to-day work and getting
it done through others, i.e. lead and delegate. As yours is the first leadership level, it sometimes
becomes difficult to find that balance.”
“Yes Dan. Letting go is tough. We have far more confidence in our own abilities than
others. We often find it easier and faster to do it ourselves than delegate and coach, which is
time consuming.”
“Yes, we do Tom. But this is a critical skill for us to move up the hierarchical ladder. How
else can we build organization capability?”
Tom was quiet as he clearly heard another reason why he is not yet ready to make AD.
“I understand Dan and am committed to make amends.”
“Let us now talk Amy. What do you think we should do?”
“We cannot lose her Dan. She is brilliant; probably one of the best young managers in the
company. Unfortunately, she seemed quite determined to leave. She has a Section Manager
offer from another global company.”
“As she is already on our promotion list, we can promote and assign her to Project Polaris
as that role is still open.”
