He looked even more uncomfortable. “She thinks she is not getting adequate freedom to
operate.” Anxiousness written all over his face, Tom continued hesitantly, “That I
micromanage her, which she doesn’t like.” Tom avoided meeting Dan’s eyes.
Dan had to exercise immense self-control to manage his nonverbals and the anger that had
begun to build inside. He thought of ThERe and said to himself, ‘I must treat this as an opportunity,
not a threat. Think, Evaluate and Respond Dan.’ The pause was making Tom even more uneasy.
Dan finally spoke, unemotionally, “Recall the ThERe model we discussed last Monday. Let
us treat this as an opportunity, instead of a threat. Let us discuss Amy little later. For now, I
want to share something with you.”
Tom nodded. There was nothing else he could think of.
“As you must be aware, micromanagement has also been my opportunity. You may have
noticed that I have been able to avoid it in the past few weeks.”
“How could I do it? It has taken lot of thinking. I found that I was micromanaging to
prevent failures because my trust in team’s capability was low. I also found that as a result, I
was absolving the team members of accountability and ownership of their work.”
“What did that do?”
Tom interjected. “You alienated us, increasing the chances of failures. In fact, there have
been far too many fires to douse, that should have been prevented in the first place.” He was
more composed now after boss’ confession to the same problem.
