Betsy added, “This may help us move towards the ‘expectation-free relationship’. I love it.”
On that happy note they decided it was time for bed.
Weekend was short and got over rather quickly. He excused himself to his study on Sunday
night. Betsy was expecting it and had lined up other things for herself.
Dan had mixed emotions about last Ron session. Although he understood the reasons,
Ron’s refusal to comment on his performance, yet giving a clear message without saying a
word, was disappointing to say the least.
‘Why should it disappoint me?’ ‘I was aware of and had already accepted this outcome long back.’
He was not able to understand and had no answer. Probably he was expecting Ron to
confirm his conspiracy theory that the company had been unfair to him. Instead, without
saying it, Ron had emphatically explained why Dan was not yet ready to become Director.
Perhaps that was the pain-point. Spoken or unspoken, truth hurts!
Other than this temporary disillusionment, Dan was quite satisfied and happy with his
learnings and progress over the past few weeks.
His thoughts moved to the Contribution-Potential matrix, and its rating. He knew that his
Contribution level was comparable to the best. The challenge was Potential, which had never
been explained to him so succinctly. More importantly, Ron’s suggested quantifiable rating
system had appealed to his analytical left brain. With trepid excitement he started self-
