Anne was watching him with pride and passion.

“Thanks for explaining this wonderful Indian belief Vik. It is really fascinating and a clear

reminder of what not to do.” Said Betsy.

“For now, let us seize this ‘Nitya’ moment to celebrate our success in conquering our egos

and surrender to our ‘Atman’. Did I get the concept correct Vik?”

“Brilliantly well Betsy.” Applauded Vik.

They started talking of more mundane things. Excited voices and constant laughter kept

the night awake.

After Chopras left past 11 pm, Dan and Betsy cleaned up and sat down.

“I liked the Anitya concept very much. We really have no idea how much time we have left

together Dan. Can we agree that we will continue to seize every Nitya moment as we have

done in the past few weeks?” asked Betsy.

“Exactly what I was thinking Bet. I want to go a step further though. I have a proposition

– if ever a conflict develops between us that we cannot resolve and leads to a rift, can we both

commit to forget about it by next morning and begin the day afresh as if nothing happened?

Betsy’s response was electric, “that will be fantastic Dan. I am fully committed. But I want

to make it interesting -- whoever does not honor this pledge will have to buy a bottle of wine

that the other person chooses; no price restrictions!” She said with a canny smile.

Dan laughed, “Done. With our skin in the game now, we may at least get to drink some

nice expensive wines.”
