“Must have been a nice weekend.” Smiled Dan.
“You must be wondering why I want to see you. Tom sent me your project NG report
yesterday. I was impressed with the clarity of your thought and the innovative proposal. It
takes our Produce-to-Demand effort to a totally different level. Please help me understand the
reasons for proposing such an unconventional approach.”
Amy’s nonverbals changed, and she could not conceal a smile. “Dan, I have researched
many next generation supply chain plans. Almost all of them prioritize one or at best 2 out of
the 4 critical supply chain vectors – Cost, Cash, Service, Agility. In today’s competitive world,
I think we need 3+; it is not either or. My proposed model optimizes 3 and inventory. It will
not be easy but can be done as I have demonstrated in the report.”
“Yes Amy. It is a breakthrough. If project NG is successful, we will reapply broadly to other
product lines as well. I want you to present your proposal and model in Joe’s leadership team
next week. I have got you on the agenda.”
Watching Amy’s nonverbals and noticing excitement in her eyes, Dan continued, “We
wanted you to lead project NG, but I was disappointed to learn that you want to move on.
Can I help the situation in any way?”
Amy thought for a few seconds. “I spoke to Tom. I have learnt a lot from him, but I am
beginning to feel somewhat stifled. Tom is a brilliant and extraordinarily strong leader, and
sometimes the pressure of schedule forces him to compromise coaching in favor of direct
involvement.”
