“Let me now ask you a more difficult question. Why do you want to get promoted?” “And

I request you to please use ThERe before you reply. I am willing to wait.”

It was a surprise to Dan that he had to think for the answer to the question that had

bothered him for so long.

‘Why do I want to get promoted? I do not think money is the reason; it never was. It is probably fairness

and true recognition of my work. That is probably the reason.’

“You got me Ron. Although more money is always welcome, it is not the reason. I guess

my desire for promotion has been in the spirit of fairness and recognition of my contributions

to The Global Company.”

“Think about it some more Dan. My submission is that fairness and recognition of your

contributions is your ‘want’. Do you know the need behind this want? But if it is the need then

let us understand how and why.”

Dan went back to thinking. ‘Is it a want or the need? I certainly want to get promoted. What is the

need? Is it money? No, I do not think so. Is it recognition? Not sure if that is true either. Is it peer pressure,

to prove to them that company values me? Damn, I am really confused. Let me see what Ron thinks.’

“Ron, Although I have always wanted to get promoted, I have never thought about the

reason why; it has just been a given. And even now I cannot figure out what is the need. I

know I want to be promoted but why is unclear. I am sure it is not money. I am uncertain if

recognition is the need either. I think it boils down to being valued; promotion will signify that

the company values my contributions.”
