“To my colleagues, to my friends, to my family and to myself, I guess.”

“So, you believe that you and everyone around you will think you are successful if you

become Director in the Global Company. Did I understand it correctly Dan?”

“I guess so Ron.” Dan replied without much conviction.

“I am sorry to persist with this line of questioning Dan. But it is important as you will soon

realize.”

“What is it that makes you and others think that you are not successful now; you are already

an Associate Director! What will change if you become Director?”

Ron could see that the question made Dan even more uncomfortable. So instead of waiting

for him to reply Ron added, “Once you are a Director, wouldn’t you and others feel the same

about becoming Vice President?”

“I don’t know Ron.” Dan mumbled and continued in a feeble voice, “I guess I will never

make a VP. So, that question will not arise.”

“Probably for you. But what about others? Everyone knows that Vice President is a higher

position than Director. Why wouldn’t they think that Dan is not successful as he did not make

VP at the Global Company? Secondly, you say, and I paraphrase – ‘I will never make VP, so

it does not bother me.’ What about Director? You think you can make Director?”

“I did Ron, before I came to you for help. But past few weeks have told me that I am not

yet ready. So, I am at peace.”
