path that could take you there – performance. And in the process, you were moving further

“Over the past few weeks, your success criteria have changed to actions that are in your
control. So, you have now started to experience successes.”
“My personal example may probably help you understand it better. Do you think I would
have made VP in such a short time if my success measure were to become VP?” asked Ron.
“I don’t know Ron.”
“No. It would not have been possible. First, the outcome of becoming VP is not in my
control. Second, I would not know what to do to become a VP. There is no defined action
plan. The inaction would have made me anxious and probably bitter putting roadblocks in my
progress.”
“Instead, my success measure has always been to perform each of my assigned
responsibility and task with excellence, to the best of my ability. Regular small wins and
successes keep me inspired and motivated. I have never worried about the outcome – how my
performance will be evaluated is my boss’ problem; not mine. I have a conviction though, that
if I perform my responsibilities with excellence, to the best of my ability, the outcome is
inevitable. And I have been proven right; promotions have continued coming my way. Even
today, I am least concerned about my next promotion. My focus is excellence in everything I
do. That is all I can do; that is the only thing in my control!”
