“But what about others. What will they think? Are you no longer concerned about your
colleagues, friends and family thinking that you are not successful?”
“Ron as I am convinced now that I am not yet ready for promotion, what others may think
is somewhat meaningless and irrelevant.”
“Brilliant! Allow me to paraphrase what you just said. I heard you say that whether I am
successful or not can only be determined by me. What others think is irrelevant. Is that
correct?”
“It is correct Ron. But I said it with reference to this specific issue of promotion. I am
somewhat puzzled whether I can broaden it to cover everything. How can we isolate ourselves
from what people think of us? Are accolades from others just to feed our ego? It is rather
confusing.”
“I can understand the dilemma Dan. Probably it is time to try to understand success. What
do you think is success?”
Dan hesitated. “It is difficult to define Ron. A close family friend is from India. He told me
that in several Asian countries, your success is measured not through your personal
achievements but by what your children have achieved. Success means different things to
different people.”
“Exactly! If success means different things to different people, how can anyone from
outside verify if you are successful? The only way they can determine it is based on what they
