INTRODUCTION Chapter 1: Introduction
Project Background
Introduction
Pet adoption plays a vital role in animal welfare across Ireland, supported by a network of shelters, rescue centers, and
foster homes. Recent years, particularly since the Covid-19 pandemic, have seen a notable increase in pet adoption,
reflecting a growing awareness of abandoned and stray animals and the significant benefits of pet ownership, such as
companionship, emotional support, and improved well-being. However, challenges persist within the adoption landscape.
While the literature highlights the positive trends, it also reveals obstacles like misconceptions about the health and
behaviour of shelter animals, which can deter potential adopters. Despite increased interest and the efforts of animal
organisations, many animals remain without homes, and shelters face severe overcrowding.
This research aims to delve into the complexities of pet adoption in Ireland. Specifically, it will investigate the motivations
and barriers faced by potential adopters, explore the factors contributing to Ireland’s concerning reputation for dog
treatment, and examine the procedures and impacts of adoption on animal welfare organisations and communities
throughout the country. The main goal of this project is to examine the main challenges of pet adoption in Ireland, what
areas need improvement, and how the process could be enhanced for all involved. This topic was chosen because the
researcher believes this topic is important and requires more awareness, while also having personal experience in this
area of pet adoption.
