CHAPTER ONE
BACKGROUND
“Wayfinding and navigation are essentials for everyday experiences, whether we need to find our way
to university, the grocery store, hiking up a mountain, or going to a new location” (Tahir and Krogstie
2023). The various functional areas of the SETU, Carlow campus buildings are interwoven, which often
leads to confusion about location for freshmen and visitors when they first arrive on campus.
New students often face the challenge of being unfamiliar with the location of campus buildings and
functional areas, resulting in a tight schedule for their first check-in or class; Visitors can get lost on
campus because they are unfamiliar with the complex names of campus buildings or can't find parking.
How to effectively navigate campus buildings and functional areas is a common problem faced by
freshmen and visitors.
