One Million Backpacks - Emerging Scholars Program
Epsilon Gamma Omega Chapter’s Target I Backpack’s program supported students in the Emerging Scholars
Program through North Alabama Center for Educational Excellence (NACEE) by providing 20 backpacks and
an inspirational book entitled, “Keep Calm and Trust God” by Jake Provance and Keith Provance. The
Emerging Scholars program supports students who identifies and assists individuals from disadvantaged
backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education. The program provides academic, career,
and financial aid counseling to its participants and it encourages them to graduate from high school and
continue on to the postsecondary school of their choice. It also serves high school dropouts by encouraging
them to reenter the educational system and complete their education. The program serves eligible participants
enrolled in four middle schools and five high schools in the Huntsville City School District, eleven schools in
the Jackson County School District, and two schools in the city of Scottsboro. At least 66% of all participants
are low-income, first-generation individuals with the potential for a postsecondary education. This will be the
second year EGO has provided backpacks to the students in hopes of helping them in a small way of getting
ready for their first year of college. Dr. Earnest Davis is the director of this program. Pictured is Dr. Cheryl R.
