Soror Janice Toney, Lead for Healthy Heart: Pink Goes Red Community Impact Day and her
committee planned a week-long series of activities to celebrate healthy eating and exercise.
There was a theme for each night. Monday was “Movin & Groovin”; Tuesday was entitled,
“Dance Fit” and “How to Read Blood Pressure”. Thursday was “Hear the Heartbeat”. The
night was filled with a Zumba Family Night and more Zumba with Soror Camille Scruggs. We
culminated the week on Friday with guest speaker Soror Dr. Patricia Martin, an Internal
Medicine Specialist, a healthy meal prep with Soror Dr. Angel Dunlap and Soror Lauren Blue.
Dr. Martin talked about the importance of healthy eating and getting vaccinated during the
COVID19 Pandemic. A “Question and Answer” period was allowed where Dr. Martin
addressed specific questions from the audience. This year the committee presented the first
Pink Goes Red Medical Award to Dr. Patricia Martin. It was a beautiful 13-inch-tall crystal
with a beveled edge trim trophy that was presented by Soror Detra Battle-Blue. Dr. Angel
Dunlap prepared grilled salmon, green beans, and a crisp salad. Soror Lauren Blue prepared a
Dijon Apple Salad. We then presented a $1000.00 dollar check to the American Heart
Association. The $1000.00 was a combined effort from Epsilon Gamma Omega in the amount
of $500; $330 from Blue’s Custom Designs; and $270.00 from Sorors who donated directly to
the American Heart Association. Also, a low-sodium seasoning mix, the cooking recipes, and
the heart healthy tips are available at your request. The activities during the week totaled 165
people in attendance. Pink Goes Red 2021 was very impactful.
