THE EGO Ivy Informer

Committee utilized the October Chapter Sorority Meeting as a way to help shine a light on the
prevalence of mental illness. Sorors were asked to wear green in honor of Mental Health Awareness
Week.

Upon entering the meeting, Sorors were given a green ribbon with a pink Breast Cancer
Awareness pin, a lanyard with information on how they could personally “Stop the Stigma of Mental
Health,” brochures and area resources from NAMI. Sorors Tonya Briggins and Trulove Sandifer
addressed Sorors on the importance of mental illness awareness. Each Soror was asked to give their
lanyard to someone in order to help spread the message to our community. Soror Briggins informed
sorors that 1 in 5 people have a mental illness and African Americans are one of the groups that are
least likely to utilize mental health counseling. Early treatment and support are crucial in the
successful treatment of mental health illnesses.
