The Opportunities
If the challenges described seem to be all doom and gloom they are more than
made up for by the opportunities.
Looking at u3a websites around the UK they are very different. Regardless of our
own website status we now all have the opportunity to improve both the look
and the content.
u3a SiteWorks offers very many more features including layout options, text and
a variety of media, easy upload or drag-and-drop photos and files, and several
new features such as photos as a slide show, and ‘Posts’ that are like a blog. It’s
different from Site Builder but in many ways I think it is easier and more intuitive
to use. You’re going to be using it soon so you can decide for yourself.
u3a SiteWorks Training & Migration
A phased approach has been adopted to give all Web Managers, regardless of
background or current knowledge, time to assimilate and practise the new things
that will be learned over the coming weeks but also to maximise the use of
resources in terms of the time of the people volunteering to help run this project.
Following this Introduction, the training will consist of 3 parts and you will
progress from one to another when you feel ready. This also depends on the
pace of the sites in front of you in the queue, especially when it’s time for
migration as that will be dependent upon the availability of team members such
as your Migrator. The Zoom Introduction to Training and Migration will have given
you an outline of the process as well as access to this workbook but there is
more detail here with fuller explanations in each part as you work through it.
Part 1: Pre-Migration Learning
The first part of your training and migration is learning u3a SiteWorks using this
workbook and an industry-standard WordPress simulation package called Local
WP running on your own computing device plus a u3a-developed demo site. The
demo site data has been set up to demonstrate particular features and to give
you the opportunity to try out and practise new ideas in a safe environment.
This is self-managed and self-paced. The focus is on how to perform tasks with
text descriptions and many graphics/screenshots to take you step-by-step
through each section. This covers the majority of things that Web Managers
spend most of their time doing.
When you have completed the workbook at your own pace and you feel ready to
move on then you will advise the team and this will be arranged. A Migrator will
be assigned to you and will guide you into the next part.
Part 2: Pre-Migration
The primary objective of this part of the process is to prepare you and your site
for migration to make it run as smoothly as possible and to maximise available
resources.
