The serum total protein test measures the total amount

of protein in serum made up of albumin, globulin, and other types of

                   proteins.

                   Hypoproteinemia

Def. Reduced plasma protein than normal (< 6 g/dl).

                              1. Liver disease (due to the decrease in plasma protein

                                 synthesis except γ–globulin).

                              2. Renal disorders (due to excessive excretion).

                              3. Maldigestion.

                   Causes 4. Malabsorption.

                              5. Overhydration: (due to dilution of plasma as in excessive

intake of plasma substitutes, such as saline and glucose).

Def. Increased plasma protein than normal (> 8 g/dl).
