communication systems, navigation and weapons.
Often, the elimination of serious breakdowns of a power plant entails many complex and
lengthy processes; sometimes it comes to cutting large technological windows in the sides of
the ship. On modular ships, the replacement of engines and related equipment should be easier
and more technologically advanced.
Still, the main goal of starting work on modular ships lies in improving the combat potential.
An example is the only Russian aircraft-carrying cruiser, the Admiral Kuznetsov. This ship received
the status of a cruiser due to the presence on board of 12 launchers for anti-ship Granit missiles.
However, for the last 12-15 years, the missile part of Kuznetsov's weapons has not been used.
According to unconfirmed reports, the missile control post was damaged because of errors made
by the ship's crew. At the same time, the design of the ship does not allow doing this quickly
and easily: you need to put Kuznetsov in dry dock, disassemble part of the flight deck, etc. In
the case of a modular ship architecture, this problem could theoretically be solved by a relatively
quick and simple removal of the damaged unit
and installing a new one in its place.
In addition, under certain circumstances,
the Granit missiles could give way to the launchers
of the newer Onyx missile.
The second direction pursued by the modular
structure is the convenience of updating the ship's
radio electronic equipment. It is worth noting that
creating block electronics will not be the easiest
task. In addition to the required characteristics,
the equipment must be compatible with other
systems. In other words, the modular structure
of electronics requires a specific approach to the
interfaces between different nodes. Moreover, the
corresponding potential should be incorporated

manufactured at different factories.
Therefore, the creation of electronic equipment
for modular ships will be no less difficult than the design of a hull with the appropriate potential.

Since ships with modular architecture are not even in the design stage yet, the most
daring thoughts arise. For example, USC designers are currently considering the possibility of
"projecting" the general concept onto the ship's hull. According to the existing idea, the body
can consist of several large blocks, the number of which can be changed. As a result, it will be
