136 The Unforgettable Moments in Life
Bike vs. Hill
By Melson Clanton
When I was 12, I lived in a duplex with a soft carpet and green grass outside. It was
always warm and windy in Fayetteville. It was a quiet neighborhood. I only had two friends. We
would always hang out at the park and play. This neighborhood was really close to the factories
and train tracks, so it was loud. But the neighbors didn't really mind because they would be
awake in the morning. I would hear birds chirping in the morning, but then I go right back to
sleep. I had nothing to worry about at the time because it was summer, and I had nothing to do
every day.
One time I was riding my bike and got scared. I was going down a steep hill too fast. I
stayed on but held the brakes too hard. I almost fell over my head. I learned not to press the
brakes so hard on my bike. When I was about to fall over my head, I heard the wind blowing by
my ears. My bike was all black and rusted up. My heart was racing, and as I’m going down the
hill, I caught my balance and took a right turn to go home. The right turn was getting easier
because of how flat the road was. I slowed down as I went to my house, and my heart started to
calm down for a bit. I went home, took a shower, ate, and went to sleep.
I woke up the next morning thinking I was crazy for pressing on the brakes too hard. I
learned my lesson to be more careful and to be smarter next time. From that day, I stopped riding
my bike down the hill.
