140 The Unforgettable Moments in Life
The Red Rug
By Miguel Martinez
When we were young, we lived in some small duplexes with my sister and my parents in
Springdale. Inside there were two rooms and one bathroom. In our living room, we had a little
table where my sister had cut her ear. There was also a red carpet on the floor where my sister
tripped and hit herself in the ear.
This is how it all began. Me and my sister started to fight playfully, but my sister hit me
in the face hard. I got mad at her, and I wanted to hit her back. She ran, so I started chasing her
through the hall and into the living room. I was right behind her when she tripped on the carpet
and cut her ear. Before she tripped (when I was still running down the hallway), I thought to
myself, “If I hit her I will get in
trouble.” Just then, her foot
went under the side of the
carpet and she fell face-first.
She tried to stop herself with
her hands, but the table was in
the way. She cut her ear where
it is attached to your face. She
started to bleed, which scared her, so she started crying. At that time, I and my sister were home
alone, and I didn’t know what to do, so I called my dad and he called one of my aunts.
Thankfully, they lived close to us. I remember how it looked once the bleeding stopped. The cut
was worse than I thought. It went pretty deep down her ear.
To this day, we don’t have red carpets in our house!
