Reference Guide Fire Strategy

Where the above conditions do not apply, i.e. the storage is deemed ancillary to the use of

the shop, the two areas need not be fire separated from one another. The schematic below
can be used as a guide to determine whether a fire rated partition is required between the

retail space and the back-of-house area in a given store.

               1.5.20 Fire Stopping

All openings for pipes, ducts, conduits or cables which pass through any fire separating

               element should be:

                   • Kept as few in number as possible,

                   • Kept as small as practicable, and

                   • Appropriately fire stopped.

Pipes which pass through fire resisting construction should meet the guidance of Table 14 of
ADB. In summary, this table permits the passage of pipes of a dimeter of 40mm through a

compartment wall. If the pipe is non-combustible, the maximum diameter can be increased
to 160mm. Alternatively, any pipe of any diameter can pass through a compartment line if it
has a proprietary sealing system which has fire test data to prove that it can maintain the fire

resistance of the wall floor or cavity.
