Reference Guide Fire Strategy
The following table outlines the exit capacity of exits from a given width:
Maximum number of persons Minimum width (mm)
60 750
110 850
220 1,050
More than 220 5mm per person
Note: the above requirements do not take account any further limitations stipulated in
Approved Document M: Access to and Use of Buildings.
1.5.4 Travel Distances
Approved Document B specifies the following maximum travel distances for a building of
Shop and Commercial use:
Maximum travel distance where escape is possible in
One direction only (m) More than one direction (m)
Shop and Commercial 18m 45m
Office 18 45
Storage (Normal Hazard) 25 45
Storage (Higher Hazard) 12 25
Place of Special Fire Hazard 9 18
Plant Room 9 35
Travel distance should be measured from the most remote part of the floorplate to a place of
relative safety, which may be a final exit, a protected stair enclosure or a compartment
boundary. Travel distances should take account of actual escape routes and therefore
cannot be measured over fixtures or furniture. Where the internal layout of fittings, partitions
etc. is not known, direct distances may be taken as 2/3rds the prescribed limit specified in
the table above.
