Reference Guide Fire Strategy
1.5.5 Stair Width
Stairs designated for escape should be suitably sized for the number of occupants expected
to use them. This width can be determined by estimating the population of the area the stair
serves and the information contained in the table below.
Maximum number of persons served by a stair of width:
1,000mm 1,100mm 1,200mm 1,300mm 1,400mm 1,500mm 1,600mm 1,700mm 1,800mm
No. of
occupants 150 220 240 260 280 300 320 340 360
served
It is noted that handrails and strings which do not protrude more than 100mm into the width
of stairs may be disregarded when measuring clear stair width.
1.5.6 Exit Signage
All escape routes should be distinctively and conspicuously marked by an exit sign in
accordance with BS ISO 3864-1 and BS5499-4.
1.5.7 Emergency Escape Lighting
Emergency Escape Lighting should be provided to enable the safe movement of persons
along all internal and external escape routes. Emergency lighting should be provided in
accordance with BS 5266-1 and BS EN 1838.
1.5.8 Door Swing
The door leaf of any doorway or exit should, where reasonably practicable, be hung to swing
in the direction of escape and should always do so if the expected occupancy is more than
60 persons.
1.5.9 Security Locking Mechanisms
Where a door required for means of escape is provided with an electromechanical or
electromagnetic type security device, the device should be appropriately interfaced with the
storewide fire alarm and detection system. The door should fail safe open unlocked in the
following circumstances:
• On operation of the fire alarm system,
• Loss of power or system error, or
• On operation of a manual door release mechanism compliant with BS EN 54-11.
