Reference Guide Fire Strategy
1.5.14 B3 – Internal Fire Spread Structure
The fire resistance levels in the following sections are specified in terms of R/E/I, where R, E
and I correspond to the following and are measured in minutes:
R – Loadbearing Capacity,
E – Integrity, and
I – Insulation.
Fire resistance requirements shall satisfy either BS 476 or the relevant European Standard
(i.e. BS EN 1364, 1365 or 1365).
1.5.15 Party Walls
Where walls are shared with adjacent tenancies these are required to achieve the relevant
fire resistance as recommended in Approved Document B (minimum 60/60/60). This
requirement increases dependent on the height of the building in which the demise is
situated.
1.5.16 Compartment Floors
Floors that separate retail and basement areas should achieve not less than 60/60/60 fire
resistance. A reduction to this requirement to a minimum of 30/30/30 has been agreed
where the following are satisfied:
• The basement is not in use or is infrequently accessed, and
• Automatic fire detection is provided through the basement space which is interfaced
with the store-wide fire alarm.
1.5.17 Fire Doors
Fire doors should satisfy the following requirements, as specified in Approved Document B:
Position of Door Required Door Installation
Protected Stair Enclosure FD30s
Forming part of an enclosure to a place of
special fire hazard FD30
Compartment wall separating purpose FD60
