GENERAL ELECTRICAL SPECIFICATION
Version 2014-2
2.9.3.2 Installation
Conduits shall be run neatly and arranged to provide a ‘loop-in’ system of cabling.
Separate conduit systems shall be provided for lighting and power circuits. Conduit
installed surface or flush shall be run truly vertical, horizontal or parallel with the features
of the building and shall not be installed closer than 150mm to any other non-electrical
services.
These conduits must not be used externally.
Special care must be exercised to ensure conduits are kept away from hot water pipes.
All conduit shall be properly supported in accordance with BS 7671. Spacer saddles shall
be used in surface installations and above suspended ceilings.
All buried conduits and fittings shall have at least 10mm depth of cover, at least 5mm of
which shall be cement. Surface fixed conduits shall be routed to avoid direct mechanical
damage.
Expansion couplings shall be fitted in runs exceeding 6 metres.
All conduit must be free to slide laterally in any fastener or saddle.
Horizontal runs should be saddled at not more than 600mm centres and vertical runs at
not more than 1.2m. Saddles should be fitted at 150mm each side of all bends.
A draw-in box shall be provided in all conduit runs exceeding 10m in length or containing
more than two right-angle bends.
All open ends left during the construction of the works shall be temporarily plugged to
prevent the ingress of foreign matter, moisture or water.
Conduit boxes, both standard and adaptable, shall be fixed to the structure of the building
independently of the conduit via two screw fixings. Washers shall be used with the
screws.
Bends shall be formed in conduits using a method approved by the conduit manufacturer
and using a bending spring of a type recommended by the conduit manufacturer.
Fractured or ‘chinked’ conduit will not be accepted.
All conduits shall be cut using a proprietary cutting tool to ensure a clean finish with no
swarf being left inside the conduit.
Joints into couplers and conduit boxes shall be made using a solvent adhesive. The
Electrical Contractor shall take all necessary precautions when using adhesive in order to
avoid the fumes being inhaled or coming into contact with the skin.
Termination at accessories shall be made into steel boxes via an adapter/flanged coupler
and male screw bush.
