GENERAL ELECTRICAL SPECIFICATION
                                 Version 2014-2

Where cables are run in trenches they shall be installed at a constant depth of 600mm
below finished ground level. The Electrical Contractor shall be responsible for ensuring
these cables are back-filled with over 100mm cover of stone free grade earth. The
Electrical Contractor shall install a continuous warning marker tape 250mm below
finished ground level along the full length of the cable route.

No joints will be permitted along the cable run.

Any covering removed to facilitate termination’s shall be made good by taping the gap
between the LSF sheath and the termination and by extending the tape over the gland.
The tape shall be applied “half lapped” and shall overlap the LSF sheath. Plastic gland
shrouds shall be fitted to all taped areas and LSF sheath and the gland (for external
termination’s) and fitted to extend over LSF sheath and the gland (for internal
termination’s). Gland shrouds shall be slotted over the cable before the gland is fitted.

When the termination is made into external lighting columns and signs the gland shall
incorporate a lead washer to ensure a watertight joint between the gland and the cut-out.
Steel wire armour will be used as the protective conductor. Care shall be taken at all
termination’s to ensure that the earth continuity is maintained. All glands, earth tags etc.
shall be fitted and tightened to the manufacturer’s recommendations. The earth tag shall
be firmly fixed to the switch gear/equipment via a brass nut, bolt and shakeproof washer.

A protective conductor shall be connected and installed between the brass bolt and the
earthing terminal of the switch gear/equipment.
Where cables pass through wall, floor ceilings etc. the holes shall be made good with
incombustible material to prevent the spread of fire.

Where the walls, floors etc. form a fire barrier the cables shall be enclosed in a steel
sleeve and the space around the cable in the sleeve shall be plugged with insulating
                         material (IET Regulation 527-02).
