BE GOING TO
A. Definition of Be Going To
The expression “be going to” is used to talk about future plans, intentions, and
predictions that are based on present evidence. It shows that something is already
decided or arranged before the moment of speaking.
B. Functions of Be Going To
1. Planned or Intended Actions
Used when the speaker has already decided to do something before speaking.
Example:
I am going to study abroad next year.
It means the decision to study abroad was made before speaking.
2. Predictions Based on Evidence
Used when there is something in the present that makes the future event seem
certain.
Example:
Look at those dark clouds. It is going to rain soon.
It means the evidence of dark clouds shows that rain will happen.
C. Sentences Patterns (Formulas)
Sentences Form Formula Example
Positive (+) S + am/is/are + going to + V1 She is going to buy a new
phone.
Negative (-) S + am/is/are + not + going to + You are not going to buy a

D. Differences Between “Will” and “Be Going To”
Aspect Will Be Going To
Decision Made at the moment of speaking. Decided before speaking.
Prediction Based on opinion or assumption. Based on evidence or current
situation.
Planning or Not planned, spontaneous. Already planned or intended.
Intention
Promise and Expresses promise, offer, or Expresses previously decided
Voluntary willingness (I will help you). intention (I am going to help you).
Example That luggage looks heavy. I will help We are going to travel to Europe next
you with it. year.
