Missionary of the Year
Cora Suggs (NAOMI A.M.E. ZION CHURCH)
Hebrew 13:16 reads, “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have
for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.”
CORA SUGGS’S life embodies her belief in that scripture. She was born in
Sylvester, Georgia. When Cora was 15 years old the family moved to New
York City. Throughout her life Cora’s mom, Doris Jackson, worked hard to
provide for her four children. She instilled in her children a strong work ethic
and a giving spirit. She also exposed them to God and urged them to accept
Jesus Christ as their Savior. As the oldest daughter, Cora, was oftentimes
asked to help raise her younger sister. This was the beginning of her passion
for helping others. Throughout high school and the two years she spent at
Brooklyn College, Cora’s caring and generous nature grew. Shortly after her time in college Cora met
Rev. Willie Swiney and, after a 6-year courtship, the two were married. Their union produced one son,
Terrell Swiney. Terrell produced two children. Her grandchildren Samantha and Roya'l are the love of
her life. Cora’s professional career can also be summarized by a life of devoted hardworking service.
She retired after 25 years of service at the Federal Reserve Bank of N.Y. Spiritually, Cora grew up in
Naomi A.M.E Church. She has been a member for over 50 years. She serves as Leader of Leaders and
on numerous other church auxiliaries. In addition to her many official roles at Naomi, Cora is always
working to help others in her church, the community and abroad. This includes giving funds to the
Children Homes and Family Ministries in her birth state of Georgia. Cora loves helping others and her
day is not complete, nor is she content, if she hasn’t lent a helping hand to someone.
Jennifer Dyer (SHAW A.M.E. ZION CHURCH)
JENNIFER DYER Jennifer Dyer was born on the Island of Dominica, West
Indies from a family of seven children, she being the third child and first
daughter. She learned life through the efforts of her mom, who did not
work, and her father, who was a postal worked in farming everyday after
his first job. After high school in Dominica, Jennifer migrated to
Guadeloupe, to live with her grandparents and found a better life, getting
a job as a cashier and learned French. Her mission work started when she
would ship food, clothes, and other items to Dominica. A few years later
she arrived in New York City to visit her sister and never left. New York City
was her dream and final destination. Jennifer loves the Big Apple, because
here she pursued a profession in real estate. She found it easy to meet
people and preach about the Word of God everywhere she goes. Jennifer
loves to pray and have fellowship. She shares testimonies about the Lord and His goodness towards her.
She finds plenty of joy in laughter and dancing. At Shaw Church in Corona, Jennifer is an Exhorter, the
Second Mile Chairperson, who provides leadership for the annual Agape Sunday observation and “Go
Red” for Heart Health awareness; she also serves as the Chairman of the Life Members Council and since
being appointed in 2018 has had six persons to become Life Members and one to upgrade to Life Matron.
Her ministry includes singing in the choir, playing guitar and the drums, visiting the sick and helping
others by generously donating items to charities. She is a gifted decorator and event planner at the
Church. Her favorite scripture is, “The joy of the Lord is my strength.” (Nehemiah 8:10) Jennifer is ever
thankful to God because He keeps on blessing her!
