Missionary of the Year

incarceration for at-risk youth, offers support for returning citizens, and continues to fight for legislation
that creates a fairer, safer, and more equitable society, particularly for black and brown persons. He is
credited with canvassing the neighborhood, writing to incarcerated persons, teaching, and helping to
end cash bail in NY. An insightful and compelling speaker, Marvin’s dedication shows his commitment
to the mission of decarceration of U.S. prisons (to learn more about his journey watch ACTIVATE: The
Global Citizen Movement on National Geographic, where he is featured). As an honorary missionary
throughout the years, he continues to be a supporter of missions; he is incredibly supportive and a vital
part of his District Officer wife, Mrs. Edith Mayfield’s ministry. Marvin continues to give his time, money,
and the gifts that God has given him to reach out to those lost and who cannot find their way. He says
that taking care of the physical needs of the Church “is ministry” to him, and the marginalized are his
“pulpit.” On any given Saturday, you can find him mowing the Church lawn, shoveling snow, painting,
and/or making repairs; also distributing food care packages, and donating clothing. A self-taught pianist
and vocalist, Marvin is committed to taking the gospel commission to the world through music. This is
evidenced by his creation, development, and training of the BUDS of Promise Choir at the Woods
Memorial where his family friend, Rev. Barry K. Hill, is pastor. The needs of the people are significant,
but God can supply all needs. God continues to use Marvin to do great things.

Catherine Hardnett (JOHN J. MOORE’S MEMORIAL A.M.E. ZION CHURCH)
CATHERINE ENGLAND HARDNETT was born in the Town of Basseterre, on the

of eleven and great grandmother of three. She received her education at
Sprott School and Basseterre Senior High School. She spent her early
years as a member of the Basseterre Methodist Church. When Catherine
migrated to the United States in 1986, she started working for the
Greyhound Bus Company for one year. Presently, she is working for
Urban Maid-Maid Enterprises. Her membership at John J. Moore’s
Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church began in 2013, when she became an active
member and has been the church’s delegate for the New York Annual
Conference and the New York City District Conference for a number of years. Honoree Catherine England
Hardnett believes that the Church’s foundation is Jesus Christ.

Peggie Witcher (CALVARY A.M.E. ZION CHURCH)

PEGGIE WITCHER was born in Henderson, North Carolina. She moved to New
York where she met her late husband. They became the proud parents of Gary
Witcher and Kenneth Witcher and the grandmother of Ariana Witcher and Synia
Witcher. Peggy joined Calvary A.M.E. Zion Church under the leadership of Rev.
Isidoa Branch Sr. Peggy is the President of the Church Choir where she sings on
Sunday, an even during this COVID-19 pandemic, she is still singing on Zoom.
Peggy is also the secretary of the Trustee Board and a member of the Usher
board, Scholarship Board and Christian Education. Peggy is also the President of the Life Members
Council for Calvary. But most of all, she is a child of God who loves the Lord. Peggy is willing to help with
anything that is asked of her from helping cook for the community outreach, to handing out school
supplies to the children. She is a devoted missionary worker and is concerned about the wellbeing of
the members of the sick and shut in. Peggy participates in attending the Tri Meetings, and now that the
meetings are on Zoom, she attends them whenever is possible. Anything you ask of Peggy she is willing
to do to help. Peggy favorite scripture is, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.”
