Missionary of the Year
incarceration for at-risk youth, offers support for returning citizens, and continues to fight for legislation
that creates a fairer, safer, and more equitable society, particularly for black and brown persons. He is
credited with canvassing the neighborhood, writing to incarcerated persons, teaching, and helping to
end cash bail in NY. An insightful and compelling speaker, Marvin’s dedication shows his commitment
to the mission of decarceration of U.S. prisons (to learn more about his journey watch ACTIVATE: The
Global Citizen Movement on National Geographic, where he is featured). As an honorary missionary
throughout the years, he continues to be a supporter of missions; he is incredibly supportive and a vital
part of his District Officer wife, Mrs. Edith Mayfield’s ministry. Marvin continues to give his time, money,
and the gifts that God has given him to reach out to those lost and who cannot find their way. He says
that taking care of the physical needs of the Church “is ministry” to him, and the marginalized are his
“pulpit.” On any given Saturday, you can find him mowing the Church lawn, shoveling snow, painting,
and/or making repairs; also distributing food care packages, and donating clothing. A self-taught pianist
and vocalist, Marvin is committed to taking the gospel commission to the world through music. This is
evidenced by his creation, development, and training of the BUDS of Promise Choir at the Woods
Memorial where his family friend, Rev. Barry K. Hill, is pastor. The needs of the people are significant,
but God can supply all needs. God continues to use Marvin to do great things.
