Supplementary course Learning Area of Science and Technology
Secondary 5 Semester 1 Time Allocation 20 hours 0.5 credit
The learning area of this course is aimed at assisting students in preparation for admission
assessment exams, IGCSE Cambridge curriculum exams and into higher education and offer the vital
knowledge that is necessary to be successful in their exams and further education at higher levels. Students
will learn and understand a variety of topics in the learning area of Physics. The course aims to provide an
enjoyable and worthwhile educational experience for all learners, whether or not they go on to study
science beyond this level. It encourages learners to develop a better understanding of the technological
world,with an informed interest in scientific matters, a recognition of the usefulness (and limitations) of
scientific method ; and an interest in , and care for, the environment. The course will impart an
understanding of the scientific skills essential for both further study and everyday life. It enables learners to
acquire sufficient knowledge and understanding to:become confident citizens in a technological
world.Learners will be able to demonstrate knowledge of scientific phenomena, facts, laws, definitions,
concepts and theories.
The teaching procedures included in this course focus on the development of a good understanding
of the basics of the subject matter, which will further help the students to understand the much-advanced
topics with relative ease. Students will experience science in its written and spoken form through a variety
of activities. A series of learning activities have been designed to increase the amount of individual attention.
Students will participate in a number of group activities involving an experiment by using scientific process,
critical thinking and an open-minded view. Other forms of teaching methods would include: lectures by the
teacher,student-led facilitation of topics; online learning; games. Throughout the course, students should
be able to use acquired knowledge and scientific skills in seeking knowledge,including ability to use
technology, thinking and problem solving to become well-rounded and fully developed in all respects -
physical, intellectual, emotional and social. The course also enables students to develop their thinking
towards the 21st century.
The course also enables students to instill the desirable characteristics, including honesty and
integrity; self-discipline; avidity for learning; dedication and commitment to work; public-mindedness; and
being healthy and well-balanced.

7. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of scientific vocabulary, terminology and
conventions (including symbols, quantities and units).
8. Develop attitudes of enquiry, inventiveness and objectivity.
9. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of scientific instruments and apparatus, including
techniques of operation and aspects of safety.
10. Develop a systemic approach to problem-solving.
