EMERGENCIES (2-100)

                              INJURIES – FIRST AID (2-100)

                              2-100 Initial Assessment
                                      A. Assess surrounding conditions for the safety of yourself and
                                         the victim.
                                      B. In an emergency, immediately assign another person to call
                                         911.
                                      C. Do not leave the injured person alone.
                                      D. Do not move an injured person unless it is necessary for the
safety of the injured or the person giving first aid (e.g. to get
the person out of the way of further harm).
                                      E. If possible, assign another person to obtain the first aid
supplies or trauma kit that is always available at your
                                         workplace.

                              2-101 Breathing – Use the “ABC’s”.
                                      A. Airway – check for obvious blockages.
                                      B. Breathing- Check for breathing. If not breathing, give 2 quick
                                         breaths.
                                      C. Circulation – check for signs of circulation. If victim is not
                                         breathing, administer CPR immediately.

2-102 Bleeding – Bring it under control ASAP.
                                      A. Direct pressure – Place a pad of the cleanest material
available, preferably sterile gauze, directly over the wound.
Hold it in place with firm pressure until a pressure bandage
can be applied. Most bleeding can be stopped by this method.
                                      B. Tourniquet – use only as a last resort to control bleeding.
Apply the tourniquet as close to the wound as possible
between the wound and the heart. Leave the tourniquet in
place to be removed only by a physician or paramedic.
                                      C. Call 911 if you cannot control the bleeding.

2-103 Shock – Help the injured to be comfortable.
                                      A. Lay the injured person into a position of comfort, place on
                                         his/her side.
                                      B. Elevate the person’s feet higher than the level of his/her head.
                                      C. Keep injured person warm.

2-104 Burns – Be careful of victim’s extreme pain.
                                      A. Burns are extremely painful and the victim frequently is in
shock. If the skin is not broken, use cool water to help stop
                                          the pain.
                                      B. For all other burns, cover loosely with clean dry gauze or
cloth to prevent air from contacting the burned area and get
                                          help immediately.
                                      C. Do not apply any butter or grease or other ointment to burned
                                          areas.
                                      D. Do not remove asphalt from skin.
