1-407 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) may be required.
Examples of PPE are: respirators, earplugs and/or earmuffs,
safety glasses, hard hat, safety toe boots, gloves, reflective vest,
welding helmet, cutting goggles, face shield, arc flash clothing, fall
protection body harness, etc.
Employees will be trained in proper selection, fit, use, limitations
and proper inspection / storage of PPE prior to use. Defective
PPE must be taken out of service and replaced.
1-408 Inspect your work area or job site before commencing work,
during and throughout your shift. Immediately barricade and
communicate to your supervisor any hazardous condition that you
cannot correct yourself. Document deficiencies and corrective
actions on your daily work place exam form.
1-409 Inspect your mobile equipment (or vehicle) before commencing
work, during and throughout your shift. Immediately communicate
any defect that could affect safe operation on the mobile
equipment (vehicle) pre-operation inspection form. If defects
affecting safe operation of mobile equipment are found,
immediately report them to your supervisor or mechanic. If
required, place a tag on the equipment and note the deficiency on
the tag. Park the equipment in the “Out of Service” area, if
provided. Repairs to safety defects must be reviewed by
appropriate personnel as per federal regulations and company
policy.
1-410 Operate mobile equipment only if you are properly task-
trained and authorized. Seatbelts must be worn at all times.
When leaving mobile equipment or passenger vehicles
(trucks/cars) unattended, place the controls in park or neutral
(follow the manufacturer’s instructions), lower GET (Ground
Engagement Tools) / implements according to manufacturer’s
instructions, shut off the power and set the parking brake. If wheel
chocks are unavailable, the wheels must be turned into a berm or
other measures taken in order to prevent movement. Sound the
horn prior to moving mobile equipment and obey plant speed limits
as applicable.
1-411 Electrical safety hazards may be present. Be aware of
energized, overhead power distribution lines. Before digging /
excavating, be aware of potentially energized underground power
cables. “Call before you dig.” Perform electrical work tasks only to
your degree of training, task training or authorization. Follow arc
flash PPE requirements specific to your site.
1-412 Proper lockout/tagout and block out (LOTO/BO) procedures
must be followed when repairing, servicing or modifying fixed and
mobile equipment with electrical and stored energy hazards such
as: hydraulic, gravity, water, pressurized air or steam, belt tension,
etc.
