But, two years afterward, B. C. 536, Darius
died; and in the same year also died Cambyses,
king of Persia, Cyrus’s father. By these events,
Cyrus was left sole monarch of the whole
empire. In this year, which closed Israel’s
seventy years of captivity, Cyrus issued his
famous decree for the return of the Jews and
the rebuilding of their temple. This was the
first instalment of the great decree for the
restoration and building again of Jerusalem
(Ezra 6:14), which was completed in the
seventh year of the reign of Artaxerxes, B. C.
457, and marked, as will hereafter be shown,
the commencement of the 2300 days of Daniel
8, the longest and most important prophetic
period mentioned in the Bible. Daniel 9:25.
