DANIEL AND THE REVELATION-Uriah Smith

~The Response of History to the Voice of Prophecy~

                                              Chapter 2-The Great Image
place in the kingdom to his uncle, Darius.

But, two years afterward, B. C. 536, Darius

died; and in the same year also died Cambyses,

king of Persia, Cyrus’s father. By these events,

Cyrus was left sole monarch of the whole

empire. In this year, which closed Israel’s

seventy years of captivity, Cyrus issued his

famous decree for the return of the Jews and

the rebuilding of their temple. This was the

first instalment of the great decree for the

restoration and building again of Jerusalem

(Ezra 6:14), which was completed in the

seventh year of the reign of Artaxerxes, B. C.

457, and marked, as will hereafter be shown,

the commencement of the 2300 days of Daniel

8, the longest and most important prophetic

period mentioned in the Bible. Daniel 9:25.
