Answer 4.
Í K 9 8 Ì K Q 8 3 2 Ë A 8 3 2 Ê 6
Again with 12 points we are going to open our longest suit and, over
partner’s 1Í response we have a bit of a problem.
We could bid 2Ë but if partner simply corrects to 2Ì he might only
have 2 and a 2Í from us on the third round would imply a stronger hand
than this.
Because of this we recommend raising spades to the 2 level here as the
best compromise.
Answer 5.
Í A 9 8 Ì K Q 9 8 3 Ë A K 3 2 Ê 6
This hand is similar to the last but this time we have extra strength (16
points). So, again a 1Ì opening and, over the 1Í response we make the 2Ë
rebid.
Most of the time responder will bid even if it is to simply put you back
to 2Ì.
Now a 2Í bid from you would describe the hand correctly and show
extra strength (about 15-17 points) with 3 spades (you did not raise the
first time), 5 hearts and 4 diamonds. Therefore 1 club at the most.
Answer 6.
Í A K 9 8 7 Ì A K J 8 3 Ë A 3 Ê 6
With 5/5 in the majors we open 1Í and hear partner bid 2Í. Partner
will have spade support and 5-9 points. Support here to the 2 level is 3
cards but usually 4 cards in the suit. (Notice that a raise to the 3 level
would always show 4 or more cards).
On the great majority of hands you will be making 10 tricks in spades
and you should simply bid the game (4Í).
