Week 10 answers.

            The bidding quiz.

Did you get them right? These are the answers to the bidding quiz.

        Hand 1. Hand 1 - dealer South
            North South North South
                       1Ì Í Q J 10 8 3 Í K 7 5
            1Í 2NT (stop) Ì K J 6 Ì A Q 10 7
            3Ì 3Í Ë 3 2 Ë Q 7 4
            4Í Pass Ê Q J 3 Ê A K 4

We are outside the range of 1NT so we open 1Ì.
With 6+ points North must bid and selects his longest suit - spades.
The 2NT rebid shows 18-19 points and, because partner will have 6+
it is game forcing. With 3 card support of partner’s suit and a hand that
might well play better in a suit contract North makes a forcing 3Ì bid.
Note that it cannot be four cards as he would have bid hearts last time.
Without 5 hearts South suggests a spade contract and shows his 3 card
spade support. Note that the same is true and that it cannot be four card
support else we would not have bid like this last time.
At last our suit is found. With a known maximum of 29 points the
slam is written off and the correct spade game is bid.

            Scores: 4Í - 10; 4Ì - 8, 5Í - 7; 3NT - 4; part scores -2.

Hand 2. Hand 2 - dealer West (who passes)
                                            North South
            North South Í A J 10 8 Í K Q 7 5
            1Ì 1Í Ì K J 6 5 Ì Q 10
            3Í 4Í Ë Q 3 Ë K 4 2
            Pass Ê A J 3 Ê K 10 4 2

With 15 points and 4-4 in both majors North selects the correct
        opening bid of 1Ì.
