Week 9 answers.

You are the opening bidder. So bid these hands and assume partner
responds in spades either by bidding 1Í or raising to 2Í -

        Answer 1.

        Í K 9 8 7 Ì K Q 8 3 Ë A 3 2 Ê K 8 6

With 4 cards in each major and a hand too strong to open 1NT (15+
        points) we open 1Ì.
Partner’s 1Í response shows 4 or more spades and 5+ points. We
have now found a good trump suit so we forget about our notrump rebid
        and instead raise to 2Í.

        Answer 2.

        Í 9 Ì A K Q 8 3 Ë A K 3 2 Ê 8 3 2

Now we have a “longest suit” and so we open it with 1Ì.
We are not excited about partner’s spade bid and so we set about
describing our hand and rebid 2Ë. Notice that when we opened 1Ì we
have promised 4+ hearts but now we have shown an unbalanced hand we
have at least 5 hearts and at least 4 diamonds.
We have denied a hand strong enough to make game opposite
partner’s known minimum (5/6 points), however, this does not prevent
responder from bidding on with extra strength.

        Answer 3.

            Í 2 Ì K Q 8 3 2 Ë A 2 Ê K J 8 6 2

13 points and 5/5 in a major and a minor. We open the major by
bidding 1Ì. Over the 1Í response from partner we are not encouraged
but we have promised to bid again if partner responds in a new suit and so
we bid our other 5 card suit at the lowest level (2Ê) and await
