It is very important that we lead the 9 Dummy
and run it (that is, play low from dummy) Ì A J 10 4
unless West plays his King. When the 9 wins
Ì K 8 5 2 Ì 7 6
we retain the lead in hand so that we can play
the Queen. No other play works (try it for
yourself). You (declarer)

The Deep Finesse
Dummy
Ì A Q 10 4
Let us look at this, more complex idea -
Now, we again lead towards honours and play the 10. If
this loses to the Jack we can later lead small to the Queen.

The play works when West has the King or the Jack and
Ì 7 5 3
plays for 4 tricks when he has both and only 3 cards.
Here is another example of the same idea. Dummy
Now a small card (3) towards dummy and if West plays Ì A Q 9 4
low we play the 9! This is a free shot and works when West
starts with J 10 x (x). Notice that ‘x’ means a small,
insignificant card.

A final word Ì 7 5 3
When should we refuse a finesse? This is a difficult lesson and we have
taught you one thing and then we immediately contradict it! Look at this -
How do we play this suit? Well, if we need two tricks Dummy
only without losing the lead then we hope the King is with Ì Q J 7 4
East and lead the Queen. But what if we need 3 tricks? Then
we play the Ace and lead towards Queen and Jack. This
works when West has the King or the suit breaks 3-3.
